Can a crazy golf renaissance put some life back into Britain's faded seaside towns?

Crazy golf. There can hardly be two words more likely to tarnish the image of a holiday destination. It’s up there with “amusement arcade” as a signifier of a seaside resort’s tackiness and decrepitude: tired putting greens with flaking windmills, found from Skegness to Scarborough. So you may be surprised to learn that crazy golf is having a renaissance.

New courses are opening at the rate of one a week. Some are indoors, to be played in the dark under UV lights. Some are adults-only, with saucy themes and cocktails. There’s even an annual World Crazy Golf Championship. No, really, it exists. Last year, Sky Sports broadcast live, on the hour, from the weekend event.
